About the event
The Round Dance, originating from Plains area tribes, has woven itself into Native American cultures for centuries, marking winter gatherings, healing ceremonies, social gatherings, and spiritual celebrations. Characterized by themes of love, loss, and humor, it combines dancing, singing, and drumming to honor Indigenous traditions and unite communities. Recently, it has also served as a rallying point for causes like Idle No More and MMIW, emphasizing community solidarity.
Central to the dance are drummers, around whom participants move in a circle, sometimes joining hands to form a continuous link. From intimate family gatherings to large-scale events, the Round Dance can scale from dozens to thousands, transcending its original purpose of combating winter solitude by fostering communal bonds through shared stories, songs, and meals. Traditionally hosted by families who provide food, these dances not only celebrate culture but also strengthen community ties, one gathering at a time.
